Rwanda : Turning local brew business into a fortune

Turning local brew business into a fortune

Yonas Mugenzi, a resident of Karama sector in Nyagatare district is a producer of local brew in his area. He says that he came up with the idea as a way of providing an opportunity for poor residents to access cheaper and refined brew.

This idea has since grown into a fully fledged brewing project (Iprovibama) from an investment of Rwf1 million, four years ago to seven million currently.

The project has not only transformed Mugenzi’s life but also created a chain of incomes- provided jobs for over 80 youths, business for farmers supplying raw materials used in the production factory and traders in the area.

One of the beneficiaries is Fatuma Irembo. She is now employed at the factory and earns at least Rwf30, 000 a month. Irembo says that this job has kept her busy and this has prevented her from wasting her youthful life.

Mugenzi, is proud that he managed to meet his goal since residents can now afford cheap local brew which also meets the standards set by the Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS).

Local leaders in Karama sector visited the project activities this January 20, and commended Mugenzi for setting an example among other residents in the community.

The sector official in charge of economic affairs, Moses Rudasingwa asked residents to emulate his example and seek advice from persons with success stories in business.
